The MSC Visual Arts Committee (VAC) is proud to present the Fourth Annual Outdoor Sculpture Exhibit at Texas A&M University featuring four sculptures by internationally recognized artist Herb Alpert. The four sculptures are on exhibit in Cain Park across from the Memorial Student Center and Kyle Field and on West Campus between the Heep Center and Kleberg Building.
A musical icon, few know that Mr. Alpert is also an artist and sculptor. For more than 30 years, he has been active in the visual arts as well as the performing arts. Alpert began by visiting countless galleries and museums all over the world, while traveling for his music.
Influenced by the tribes of the Pacific Northwest, Alpert reinvigorates the traditional totem. Mr. Alpert starts his totems by hand forming wax maquettes and clay prototypes. These are later cast in bronze and treated with acid washes and oxide patinas. The totems exhibited on campus weigh up to 1000 pounds and are approximately 8 feet tall.
MSC VAC started programming the green spaces in Cain Park and on West Campus in 2002. The Spirit Totems will be on display through August 21, 2008.
