Listen to an Interview with the Artist
The MSC Visual Arts Committee invites you to come take a ride with Matthew Brown in their first exhibition for the 2007-08 school year, Venice to Venice with Matthew Brown at the J. Wayne Stark University Center Galleries. The exhibition features twenty paintings by Colorado artist Matthew Brown.
Brown illustrates scenes using shapes and lines, connecting lighting and space often with color. With rigid angles and shapes, his pieces focus on the meaning of the scene or idea. This in-depth focus on experience is portrayed through the senses, eliminating “clutter,” as he puts it, in order to articulate his message to the viewer. Much in the way a poet carefully considers every word he pens, Brown focuses on deliberate placement of his lines and color combinations to convey the spirit of a scene.
Brown says of his work, “Graphic Design is an intriguing avenue of artistic exploration; however, I would not want to be a graphic designer. I am not interested in realizing someone else's ideas. But I will utilize the elements of graphic design to interpret and analyze all the essences of a scene or idea, including aspects of the senses that always contribute to my experience.”
Brown has spent much of the past few years in Italy, perfecting his technique. He explored blind contour line drawings throughout this period.
Venice to Venice with Matthew Brown will be on display until October 12. The MSC Visual Arts Committee organizes five exhibitions per year in the Center Gallery at the J. Wayne Stark University Center Galleries. The mission of the MSC Visual Arts Committee is to provide the students of Texas A&M University opportunities to connect the visual arts with their personal lives through art exhibitions (including student work), gallery programs, artist residencies, and travel.
